Sec 1 Math: Why Students Struggle with Algebra
13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle
Sec 1 algebra is where confident primary pupils lose their footing. The PSLE rewarded a model drawn in the margin. Secondary 1 writes “let the number be x”, then asks the child to simplify −2(3x − 5) + 4x without drawing anything. The struggle is the notation, and it shows up between January and March, when the first test comes back.

- The jump
- From models and numbers to letters that stand for numbers
- First trap
- 3x + 2 is not 5x. 3x means 3 × x
- Second trap
- A minus sign in front of a bracket multiplies every term inside
- Syllabus
- G2 and G3 Sec 1: expressions, brackets, common factors, linear equations
- When it shows
- The first weighted assessment, usually Term 1
- The fix
- Say the meaning of each line aloud, then correct that one error type
Why PSLE strength does not transfer

Primary problem sums lean on the model method and a set of heuristics. Those skills still matter. Algebra is a second language placed on top of them. A child who could draw four units equalling 48 can still not see that the same fact is 4x = 48. The holiday version of that translation is on the Sec 1 preparation page. This page is what to do once the school worksheets have started and the scripts are marked wrong. [2]
What Sec 1 actually teaches

The G2 and G3 syllabuses put algebraic expressions in Secondary 1, not in a later year. The list below is the part that produces the first bad test. Numbers, negatives, primes and percentage are in the same year and are a different problem. If those are fine and the letter questions are not, you are looking at algebra, and the revision plan should stay there. [1]
| Topic | What the child must be able to do | A one-line check |
|---|---|---|
| Notation | Read 3y as 3 × y, and xy as x × y | Say it aloud before simplifying |
| Substitution | Replace the letter with a number, including a negative | If x = −2, what is 3x + 1? |
| Like terms | Add 3x and 2x. Leave 3x + 2 as it is | 3x + 2x = 5x. 3x + 2 stays 3x + 2 |
| Brackets | Multiply every term inside, and keep the minus | −2(x − 5) = −2x + 10 |
| Common factors | Take out the shared factor | 6x + 9 = 3(2x + 3) |
| Equations | Keep both sides balanced | 2x + 3 = 15, so 2x = 12, so x = 6 |
The errors worth fixing

| What the child writes | Why it happens | The line to insist on |
|---|---|---|
| 3x + 2 = 5x | The “+” is being treated as if both terms contain x | Only letters that match can be added |
| −2(x − 5) = −2x − 5 | The minus is applied to the first term only | Minus times minus is plus: −2 × −5 = +10 |
| x + x + x = x³ | A primary rule about powers is being reused | Three x added is 3x. x³ is x × x × x |
| From 2x + 3 = 15 to x + 3 = 15 | The 2 is dropped because it “looks like a label” | Divide both sides by 2 only after the +3 has moved |
| If x = 4, 2x + 1 = 24 + 1 | Concatenating 2 and 4 instead of multiplying | 2x means 2 × 4 = 8, so the value is 9 |
Negative numbers make every row worse. A child who is unsure whether −3 − 4 is −7 will fail a bracket question that they could otherwise expand. If the arithmetic with negatives is shaky, do that for a week before any new algebra chapter. The PSLE heuristics page still helps with the word problems that sit on top of the algebra: twelve heuristics.

How to fix them

One error type, said aloud, for two weeks
- Pick the row in Table 2 that appears most often on the last script. Ignore the others for now.
- Eight questions on that row, four nights a week. The child reads each line as words: “minus two times the bracket x minus five”.
- They mark their own answer against the insisted-on line before you look. The point is that they notice the sign.
- In week three, mix the row back into a normal worksheet. If the error returns only when the question is long, the gap is attention, and the fix is writing the expanded line on its own first.
A tutor is the right spend when you cannot tell which row it is, or when the child will not say the line aloud to a parent. Sec 1 part-time tutors in the October 2026 bands are $30–40 an hour. What each tutor type is for, including when an ex-MOE teacher is the wrong expense, is on the tutor types page. The year this feeds is Sec 3, when Additional Mathematics assumes the algebra is already fluent: subject combinations.
Questions parents ask
Why do students who did well in PSLE Math struggle with Sec 1 algebra?
PSLE problem sums are usually solved with models, numbers and heuristics. Sec 1 writes the same relationship with a letter. A child can be fluent at the model method and still freeze when the worksheet says “let the number be x”. The ideas are not all new. The notation is. Negative numbers, brackets and “like terms” arrive in the same term, so one confusion looks like the child has forgotten primary math.
What algebra is in the Sec 1 syllabus?
On the MOE G2 and G3 mathematics syllabuses, Secondary 1 algebra includes using letters for numbers, the notation rules (3y means 3 times y), evaluating expressions, turning a short situation into an expression, simple nth terms, adding and subtracting linear expressions, expanding brackets and taking out common factors. Linear equations in one variable sit alongside that. G1 covers a smaller set. The school’s subject level is the list that matters.
What are the most common Sec 1 algebra mistakes?
Treating 3x + 2 as 5x. Expanding −2(x − 5) as −2x − 5, and dropping the sign. Writing 4 + 4 as 44, or 3 × x as 3x and then adding the 3 and the x later. Moving a term across an equals sign without changing the operation. Each of these is a notation error. The child often understands the story in the question.
When should we get a Sec 1 math tutor?
After the first weighted assessment, if algebra items are the ones lost and the arithmetic items are fine. January to March is when those scripts come home. A weekly tutor who will make the child say what 3x means, every time, is the fix. A tutor who only redoes PSLE problem sums will not touch the new failure. Sec 1 rates are on the home tuition rates page.
Is algebra different at G1, G2 and G3?
Yes. G3 is the fullest Secondary 1 algebra list, including simplification with brackets and fractional expressions of the kind in the G2 and G3 syllabus. G1 introduces letters, substitution and simpler sequences, and leaves more of the manipulation to later years. Ask the school which level your child is taking before you buy a G3 assessment book for a G1 class.
