Sec 3 Subject Combinations: A Math vs E Math, Pure vs Combined Science
13 October 2026 · Tutor Circle
A Math is not compulsory. E Math stays even if A Math is added. Pure science is two or three separate subjects. Combined science is one subject covering two sciences. The combination changes the JC and polytechnic doors that stay easy to open, and it changes the homework volume from the first week of Sec 3.

- A Math
- An elective. It does not replace E Math
- E Math
- The core mathematics subject, at the level the school offers
- Pure science
- Separate Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Usually two, sometimes three
- Combined science
- One subject, two sciences, less depth, fewer timetable slots
- Who decides
- The school, from Sec 2 results and its own criteria
A Math and E Math
Families still say E Math and A Math. Under the SEC, those are G3 Mathematics and G3 Additional Mathematics for students taking them at the most demanding level. [1] The school may also offer mathematics at G2. A student who is not secure at the mathematics they already take should not add Additional Mathematics on top.
| E Math | A Math | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Core mathematics through Sec 4 | Elective, sat as well as E Math |
| Compulsory? | The mathematics subject itself is part of the secondary course | No. The school sets the entry bar |
| Typical content jump | Algebra, graphs, geometry, statistics at secondary level | Harder algebra, trigonometry, and the ideas H2 Math later assumes |
| If it goes badly | This is the subject to repair first | It can be dropped only on the school’s timeline. Ask early |
Pure and combined science
Lower secondary science was one subject. At Sec 3 the school splits the path. Pure science means sitting Physics, Chemistry or Biology as its own subject, with its own theory and practical. Most students who “take pure” take two of the three. Three pure sciences is a full load and crowds out a humanities subject. Combined science is one grade made from two sciences, commonly Physics with Chemistry, or Chemistry with Biology.
| Combined science | Two pure sciences | |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects on the timetable | 1 | 2 |
| Depth | Enough to continue, less content per science | Closer to the old pure O-Level subject |
| Practicals | Inside the one subject | Each science has its own |
| Homework volume | One teacher’s set | Two sets, and they peak in the same week |
What each combination keeps open
Treat the rows below as the usual pattern, then check the year’s JC and polytechnic pages. A national exam does not freeze every course rule for three years. The SEC and the 2028 polytechnic benchmark are explained on the SEC exam page. [2] [3]
| Later path | E Math only | E Math + A Math | Combined science | Two pure sciences |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JC, H1 Mathematics | Usually open | Open | — | — |
| JC, H2 Mathematics | Often limited. Check the college | The assumed background | — | — |
| JC, H2 Physics or Chemistry | — | — | Possible with a strong grade. Check | The more direct preparation |
| Polytechnic, many non-science courses | Open if the aggregate works | Open | Often enough | More than enough |
| Polytechnic, engineering or science courses | Mathematics still required. Check the course | Helpful, not always named | Often accepted. Check the science named | The combination those pages are written around |
From the 2028 polytechnic Year 1 intake, the admission aggregate can include one G2 subject against four G3 subjects. [2] That is not a reason to drop a science the course names. It is a reason to read the course list instead of assuming five G3 A1s are the only route.
Signs a child is ready for A Math
- Sec 2 algebra is stable: expansion, factorisation, and changing the subject of a formula, done without a model for every line.
- The school result was consistent across the year, not one strong paper after a weak year.
- The child can say, in a sentence, what an equation is claiming, before solving it.
- There is an actual hour in the week. A Math plus two pure sciences plus a CCA that ends at 7pm is a timetable problem, not a character test.
- E Math is not the subject currently being rescued. Repair that first.
A child who meets three of the five is a real candidate. A child who meets only the parent’s hope should stay with E Math and combined science, and do them well. A strong combined-science grade beats a pure-science subject that is dropped in Sec 4.
How heavy the week is

A honest weekly picture
E Math plus combined science is one mathematics set and one science set. A Math plus two pure sciences is three extra papers’ worth of practice on top of E Math. Families feel that in Term 2, when school tests pile up, not in the first briefing. If tuition is part of the plan, start with the new subject, not with a tutor for every subject on the timetable. Sec 3 rates, including ex-MOE teachers, are on the rate table.
Questions parents ask
Is A Math compulsory in Singapore?
No. Additional Mathematics is an elective. Schools offer it to Sec 3 students who meet the school’s own mathematics requirement. A student who takes A Math still takes E Math. A Math does not replace E Math. On the SEC, parents’ “E Math” is G3 Mathematics and “A Math” is G3 Additional Mathematics.
What is the difference between A Math and E Math?
E Math, Elementary Mathematics, is the core mathematics subject: number, algebra, graphs, geometry and statistics at secondary level. A Math goes further into algebra, trigonometry and calculus-style change. Junior college H2 Mathematics is built on A Math. A student without A Math can still enter a junior college and may be offered H1 Mathematics instead. The year’s rule is the college’s.
Should my child take pure science or combined science?
Pure science means the separate Physics, Chemistry or Biology subjects, usually two of them, sometimes three. Combined science is one subject that covers two sciences in less depth, and it is still a full G3 subject. Pure science is the heavier timetable and the more direct preparation for H2 sciences. Combined science is enough for many polytechnic courses. Read the course page before treating pure science as a national requirement.
What if Sec 2 math was uneven?
Do not use a weak E Math year as the moment to add A Math. The signs of readiness are stable algebra, factorisation that does not collapse, and school results that were not a single lucky paper. If those are missing, the Sec 3 job is E Math. A Math can be reconsidered only if the school’s window is still open and the algebra has actually improved.
Does this change under the SEC?
The first SEC is in 2027, sat by students who are in Sec 3 in 2026. The subject names parents use stay meaningful: G3 Mathematics and G3 Additional Mathematics, and the sciences at the level the school registers. The certificate lists the level. It does not make A Math compulsory.
